The Best First Shoes for Boys: Supporting Healthy Foot Development

When my son was born, he was quite a big baby and we could not find any shoes that fit him. During his first year, we decided to keep his feet bare as much as possible, using only socks on colder days. He spent his time crawling, exploring, and eventually pulling himself up to stand, all without the restriction of shoes.

Upon doing my research, I learnt that barefoot is best when babies are learning to walk. Here’s why:

  • Natural Foot Development: Babies’ feet are soft and pliable, with more cartilage than bone. Wearing shoes too early can restrict natural growth.
  • Improved Balance & Strength: Walking barefoot allows babies to strengthen their muscles, develop better coordination, and improve balance.
  • Sensory Feedback: The nerve endings in their feet send signals to their brain, helping them understand surfaces and textures, which is crucial for motor development.
  • Better Posture: Shoes with rigid soles can alter a baby’s natural gait, leading to potential posture issues in the long run.

Many traditional baby shoes are too stiff, too heavy, or have thick soles that reduce sensory feedback. Some even have arch support, which is unnecessary and can actually hinder natural foot development. Babies don’t need shoes until they’re confidently walking outdoors.

Finding the Right Shoes for New Walkers

Once my son started walking, I knew I needed to find shoes that ticked all the boxes.

  • Were lightweight so they didn’t weigh his little feet down
  • Had flexible soles to allow natural movement
  • Were easy for him to put on and take off himself (to encourage independence)
  • Were affordable—because let’s face it, kids grow out of shoes fast!

After searching high and low at the local shops, I found these amazing boys’ shoes from Mr Price. They checked all the boxes: soft, lightweight, and flexible, they also have a velcro strap allowing my son to open and close the shoes himself, while also being budget-friendly. They have been my go-to choice for everyday wear, whether we’re at the in the mall, running errands, going to church or walking down the street. Pitta Patta shoes are also an amazing option – Super flexible with a soft leather sole.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a parent searching for the best shoes for your toddler, remember to prioritise flexibility, comfort, and affordability. Barefoot is best whenever possible, but when shoes are needed, opt for ones that support natural foot development rather than restricting it.
