The Yellow Butterfly

In Memory of my daughter Ava

The Story of the yellow butterfly. Its more than just a pretty symbol to me. They hold a story that’s close to my heart, one that began long before my daughter Ava Grace was born and has continued as a gentle reminder of God’s presence ever since. Here’s the story behind the yellow butterfly.

Before I ever knew Ava Grace, before I ever saw those two pink lines, I asked the Lord for a sign.

It wasn’t a planned prayer or something deeply spiritual. It just came out of my heart one day. I said, “Lord, if I’m pregnant, will You show me a yellow butterfly?” To this day, I don’t really know why I chose yellow. It’s not even my favourite colour. In fact, I’ve never really liked the colour. But for some reason, I said yellow.

At the time, I was horse riding often, and the trails were always full of little white and yellow butterflies fluttering between the trees. They felt like a part of the forest, gentle, familiar, always there.

But that week, not one butterfly in sight. Not a single one.

I remember thinking, “Well, clearly that’s a no. Definitely not pregnant.” I let it go, and didnt really think much about it again… I forgot I’d ever asked God for that sign.

Then a few weeks later, maybe a month or two after, I was sitting in a meeting at my boss’s house. Out of nowhere, this huge yellow butterfly flew straight up to my face and danced around me. I froze for a moment. It felt like time slowed. I looked at it and thought, “Hmm… I wonder if I am. I wonder if that’s my sign.”

Turns out, it was. I took a pregnancy test the following week and it was positive. Is it not so amazing how God meets us right where we are with what we need at the perfect time.

When we later found out that Ava wasn’t going to make it, my heart shattered. The kind of ache that steals your breath. I remember standing at the window one day, looking out at the sky, and whispering, “Lord, are You with me in this? Why has this happened? Please, show me something.”

And without fail, almost every single day, I would see a yellow butterfly.

Sometimes in the garden. Sometimes flying beside the car. Sometimes at a restaurant it would fly right up to me. Right in front of me, never far away, but close. Always close.

In those moments, I knew the Lord was reminding me, “I’m here. I see you. I’m crying with you. I hear every single prayer.” It felt like His gentle way of saying, “I haven’t left you, even in this.”

Now, yellow butterflies are woven into the heart of Faithfilled . To me they’re a testimony of God’s faithfulness and presence in the middle of heartbreak. Through this journey, the Lord has given me the courage to speak up and share my story. To encourage other moms who may be walking through their own valleys. For so long I carried the pain quietly, but I’ve learned that there is healing in sharing, comfort in connection, and purpose in pain.

I felt so close to Jesus in those moments when the yellow butterflies appeared again and again. Each one reminded me that He was near, that He saw my tears, and that beauty can still bloom in the hardest seasons.
